What if? Metropolis: Online Green Review Part 1

  1. OGR 04/11/2018

Hey Katerin, so if I'm being completely honest, I find your OGR to be rather disappointing, both in terms of ambition and clarity of research and also work undertaken. There is precious little here, and what is available to me suggest that you're understanding of your artist is.... weak. I assume you're emphasis on 'crystals' comes from your impression of what Balla's work reminds you of - so the faceted quality of his paintings. To be honest, this is irrelevant, because you're being asked to understand why Balla is painting the way he is - i.e. he is drawing sequentially, he is trying to capture energy and speed and movement and 'the future' - velocity, forward momentum and so on. In other words, quite the opposite of a inert rock or crystal. I'm a bit confused, Katerin, because even the most superficial bit of research into your artist would have told you that he was a 'futurist' - and that 'futurists' loved movement and speed. I'm not sure what you've been doing for the first two weeks of this project, but it's not been 'research'...

Can I suggest - as a reality check - you take a look at these equivalent OGRs and my accompanying feedback. You need to get to this place quickly or risk falling behind.

One of the things I've noticed about your work in general terms is your reluctance around research and the effort you 'don't' make; it's there in your Context presentations and it was likewise true of your Invisible Cities submission - a lack of research giving rise to a lack of ideas and a lack of ideas giving rise to more limited results. I know you're always looking to the Maya bit - where you are already confident - BUT, if I can be completely straight-talking with you, this is the bit of your project you need to take more seriously. As of this OGR feedback, you're two weeks in and you've got very little to show. I'd like to see you respond positively to this reality-check and do the difficult bit please. Can you post an updated expanded OGR in which you better demonstrate a) your understanding of your artist's interests and b) how those interests might be reflected as characteristics of your WIM scene. Sorry to play hardball, but better now while you've got the time and opportunity to act, than later, right? Go on, impress me.

  2. Thanks for the feed back and Honesty.I do agree with you although i did Research into him I don't think i did as much as i should have. The emphasis on crystals was more to do with his work on motion and light i thought that crystals can be used in contrast with light because of the effects they give when incorporated together, But i see now that i should of done further research before i pursued that idea further.
