Here are the textures I created using substance painter for my child character I used a combination of Paint layers with a fill effect to add an overall colour to the UV. To achieve the freckles and details on the face I used a black layer mask and painted over it with different texture brushes to reveal the fill layer colour. I have also added 3 different skin layers stacked on top to achieve a textured feel on the skin.

I think the 3D pop-up thing could work really nicely: you might want to look at this technique too; it's in the same zone - isometric models/animations:

They have that same sense of miniature/cuteness implied by the pop-up idea. In terms of narration, yes, but I also think you might want to consider using key words appear within the animation too - a bit like when, at school, you would add labels to diagrams. You've already done a quick exercise with Simon using AE and Maya together in order to get text to 'stick' to 3D spaces, angles, objects and cameras - so you've got a technique in readiness there for this sort of thing:
